Destination dependent(our Final Docs include this packing list): As a general guide for this trip, comfortable, casual wash-and-wear clothes are recommended, and if in doubt muted colors are always best. It is worth remembering that while on Safari, and while enjoying many of the outdoor activities we have planned it could get a bit chilly in the early mornings and evenings.
The most practical items to pack for this trip are:
- Khaki, green, beige, and neutral colors (camouflage print should be avoided)
- 2 X Shirts with long sleeves made from a breathable material (protection from sun, insects, etc.)
- 2 X T-shirts for relaxing around the lodge, casual city touring, wine country, etc.
- 2 X Shorts or light skirts for relaxing around the lodge, casual city touring, wine country, etc.
- 2 X Safari trousers for safari drives (although shorts are also fine), nature walks, etc.
- 2 X Jeans or casual trousers for relaxing around the hotels/lodge or for less arduous activities
- 1 X Smart/Casual outfit for nice dinners
- 1 X Warm jacket for the early morning/evening safari drives
- 1 X Lightweight waterproof jacket/rain jacket(preferably with a hood)
- 1 X Pair of comfortable walking shoes
- 1 X Pair of smart/casual shoes for dinners in the evenings, etc.
- 1 X Pair of flip-flops or sandals for relaxing at the hotel, the safari lodge, etc.
- 1 X Backpack or similar for carrying items during tours days (waterproof preferably)
- Sunblock, sunglasses, a broad-brimmed hat, moisturizer, and lip-salve are all essentials
- Strong insect repellent
- Binoculars (compact and easy to carry) and camera equipment
- Swimwear
Please note the lodges and hotels do their best to deliver a same-day laundry service and so there is no need to bring a large amount of clothing. It is very easy to cycle through the same 2 or 3 shirts/shorts/trousers throughout the trip. At the lodges, soap suds are generally provided in your room for delicate items. Please be mindful that due to culture and customs in some of the areas you will be visiting certain lodges/camps do not wash underwear.
The short answer is anytime! While there are better and worse times to be on safari throughout the various regions of Africa because the continent is so large and so diverse whenever you are looking to travel there will be a destination that is right for you.
Traditionally, the best time to go on safari is during the dry season that broadly runs from June through October, however, this season does vary significantly depending on where in Africa you are considering. During the dry season, the vegetation is much less dense and because the grass is shorter it is much easier to track and locate wildlife. Additionally, when there is less rainfall there are fewer available water sources for wildlife to gather around. This results in the animals tending to congregate around the same lakes, pans, and rivers which again makes for great game viewing (and leads to some interesting herbivore/predator encounters!).
Often during the wet season, also called the green season, when water sources are abundant, the wildlife tends to spread out over an enormous area. Many camps and lodges close during this time of year, often December through February as the dirt tracks that surround the lodges become impassable.
Another aspect to consider, especially if visiting East Africa, is the great migration. Please visit our page that explores this topic at length as it will give you a good idea as to where the migration is located at any particular time of year.

- Africa adventures at every price point. While experts at high-end luxury travel, we also have a strong focus on ‘affordable luxury’. Not every safari has to cost $50,000+ per person, there are amazing safari lodges, boutique hotels, and island resorts that fit perfectly within a budget starting from $8,000 per person.
- Based in the USA (Tampa, Florida), same time zone, always quote and take payment in USD, guarantee the exchange rate at the time of deposit, handle all international wire payments, can speak with clients via Zoom.
- Can quote either Net or Gross and Commissionable.
- Where possible we have direct SRO contracts with hotels, safari lodges, and resorts to ensure we are getting the best possible rates. This allows us to maximize value for your client, protect our margins, and boost your commissions.
- Africa-based DMC’s are in the opposite time zone, quote in local currencies, require international wire transfers, and often can’t join client calls. None of these are issues when working with Exeter Safari Company.
