Gravetye Manor was built for love in the 16th century when Sussex local Richard Infield envisioned the estate as home to him and his bride, Katharine Compton. Today, guests can see the initials “R&K” engraved on the main entrance door and an oak-carved portrait of the couple in one of the bedrooms.
Guests have the choice of 17 beautiful rooms and suites, each named for a type of tree found on the estate and furnished with antiques, original paintings, and quirky period features that provide an old-world charm experience exquisitely blended with modern-day luxury. The manor prides itself on serving garden-based and locally sourced cuisine at its Michelin-starred restaurant – complemented by uninterrupted views of the world-renowned Kitchen Garden. The 35-acre visionary garden was first created by past owner and notable gardener William Robinson in 1885. Today, a team of full-time gardeners manage the historic garden and host regular tours. For the true green thumb, numerous renowned gardens exist in the area, from the Borde Hill Estate to the High Beeches Garden.
Guests may also venture out for golfing, horseback riding, countryside walks, and more, or stay in for in-room spa treatments or just to relax by the fire with a good book.
Less than a half-hour from Gatwick Airport, under an hour’s train journey from central London, and less than two hours’ travel time from Southampton, this English countryside retreat is ideal for weekend getaways and pre- and post-cruise experiences.
